How do you calculate the value of gold jewellery?

Multiply the jewellery's weight by its fineness (in thousandths) to get the weight of pure gold, then multiply that weight by the gold price per gram. For example, a 10 g chain in 18-karat gold contains 7.5 g of pure gold (10 × 750 / 1000). The price per gram is obtained by dividing the price per ounce by 31.1035.

What do karats mean?

CaratsFineness
24 carats999‰
22 carats916‰
18 carats750‰
14 carats585‰
9 carats375‰

Where can I find the hallmark on a piece of jewellery?

The hallmark is often found on a necklace clasp or inside a ring. In France, an eagle's head indicates 18-karat gold. View the hallmark guide.
